What Is Organic Tea?
Organic tea is tea made from Camellia sinensis—the same plant as black, green, oolong and white tea—grown and processed under certified organic standards. That means no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilisers, and no genetically modified organisms. Soil fertility is built with compost, cover crops and other approved natural methods, and the farm must pass annual inspection by an accredited certifier with traceability from field to finished pack.
“Organic” is not the same as “natural” on a label: only certified organic tea has been audited against a published standard. Herbal infusions (peppermint, chamomile and similar) are not tea unless they include Camellia sinensis; this collection is true organic Ceylon tea only.
Organic Tea vs Conventional Tea
- Farming inputs: Conventional gardens may use synthetic fertilisers and crop chemicals; certified organic gardens rely on approved natural inputs and integrated pest management.
- Certification: Organic tea is verified by third parties (for example NASAA Organic, USDA NOP and EU Organic); conventional tea is not held to those rules unless separately certified.
- Residue and transparency: Organic systems emphasise documented practices and chain-of-custody from estate to your cup.
- Flavour: Both can be excellent; organic Ceylon teas from high-grown Uva often show bright, clean liquor when leaf quality and brewing are right.
What Our Certifications Mean
- NASAA Organic: Australia’s established organic standard (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia)—relevant when you buy organic tea in Australia.
- USDA Organic (NOP): Meets U.S. National Organic Program requirements for growing, handling and labelling.
- EU Organic: Complies with European Union organic regulation for production and traceability.
- Fairtrade: Supports fair pricing and social standards for workers and communities (Idalgashinna since 1992).
- Rainforest Alliance: Recognises more sustainable farming and land management practices.
- Biodynamic: Holistic farm management that treats the estate as a self-sustaining ecosystem (Idalgashinna since 1999).
Idalgashinna Estate, Haputale (Uva)
Every organic tea in this shop section is sourced from Idalgashinna in the Haputale district of Sri Lanka’s Uva highlands. The garden began tea production in 1984 and earned organic certification in 1989, among the earliest in world tea. Cool nights, mist and elevation slow leaf growth and help develop the aromatic, bright character typical of Uva teas.

- Organic green — cooler water (~75–85°C), steep 2–3 minutes; shorter steeps stay sweeter, longer steeps add astringency.
- Serve — blacks plain or with milk; greens usually plain. Use fresh filtered water for the clearest cup.
